Buddy Compton

In a heartfelt tribute to a distinguished educator and community leader, the Colorado ISD School Board has named their new boardroom the C.E. “Buddy” Compton Board Room on August 12. This honor, approved unanimously during a recent board meeting, recognizes Compton’s remarkable contributions to the district and his enduring impact on education in Colorado ISD.

C.E. “Buddy” Compton, a 1961 graduate of Colorado High School, has deep roots in Colorado City. His educational journey began at Kelly and Hutchinson Elementary before continuing at the University of Arkansas on a football scholarship. Compton later transferred to Sul Ross State University, where he not only continued his athletic career but also met his future wife, Carol. They married in 1964, and Buddy completed his undergraduate studies at Southwest Texas State in 1966.

Beginning his career in education in 1966 as a teacher and coach in Alvarado, Compton’s professional path led him to positions in Sweetwater, Athens, Carrollton, and San Antonio. His tenure at Robert G. Cole High School in San Antonio was particularly notable. As principal, he guided the school to win the U.S. Department of Education’s Blue Ribbon Exemplary School Award in 1987 and again in 1991, leading to special meetings with Presidents Ronald Reagan and George H.W. Bush. Compton was also recognized as the Texas Association of Secondary Schools Outstanding High School Principal for Region 20 in 1991. Notably, he had the opportunity to mentor future basketball legend Shaquille O’Neal during his time at Cole.

In 1996, Compton returned to his roots in Colorado City, serving as principal of Colorado High School for three years before transitioning to the role of superintendent, where he served for an additional three years. After retiring in 2002, Compton pursued his passion for woodturning, creating exquisite pieces of art and contributing to the Southwest Association of Turners.

Buddy and Carol Compton are proud parents to two daughters, Anne Bazany and Kaci Griffith, both of whom are current educators at Colorado High School. They are also grandparents to five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. The Compton family’s strong ties to education and their active involvement in the community were evident as they gathered to celebrate this special occasion.Compton 1

The board’s decision to name the boardroom in his honor was met with enthusiastic support. Trustee Ty Wood made the motion, which was seconded by Trustee John Martinez. The unanimous approval reflects the board’s deep appreciation for Compton’s service and legacy.

With this dedication, the C.E. “Buddy” Compton Board Room stands as a lasting tribute to an individual whose career has been marked by exceptional leadership, commitment to education, and a profound influence on the Colorado ISD community. Congratulations to Mr. Compton, and thank you for your invaluable contributions to the district.
