School Board Meeting

At the CISD Board of Trustees meeting on September 9, 2024, President Emily Strain guided an evening of impactful decisions and enthusiastic discussions, reflecting the board’s commitment to enhancing district facilities and supporting student programs.

The meeting kicked off with the usual call to order, determination of quorum, invocation, and pledges to the flags. Following these formalities, the floor was opened for public comments. Booster Club President Jeremy Epperson took this opportunity to update the board and the community on the Booster Club’s latest initiatives.

In response to Epperson’s remarks, Dr. Polk swiftly moved the agenda to address the Booster Club’s funding request. The board voted decisively to approve $15,000 in seed funds for upgrading the concession stand facilities, ensuring a better experience for all during game days.

The board also made significant strides in infrastructure improvements. A $300,000 investment was approved to relocate the pole vault, long jump, and triple jump areas inside the stadium. Facilities Manager Robert Oliver outlined how this relocation will solve severe erosion and maintenance issues while also preventing conflicts with the new softball field. While board members Ty Woods and Liliana Ornelas raised concerns about cost and information at the time of the vote, and John Martinez abstaining from the vote, the motion secured majority approval. The project will be funded through Bond 2024.

In a highlight of the evening, Assistant High School Principal Ed Wilson shared the exciting news about the launch of a new driver’s education program set to begin this year for Seniors and Juniors. Thanks to a generous donation from Pecos ISD—a car specifically for driver’s education—the program is already off to a fantastic start. This donation ensures that students will gain valuable hands-on experience and be well-prepared for their driving tests. Wilson also provided updates on STAAR retesting preparations and ongoing athletic successes.

Elementary and Middle School Principal Lorianne Toombs reported on the recent success of a book fair, which raised over $13,000, with half of that amount benefiting the school. The high participation in events like Grandparents' Day and the positive early feedback on the new academic model focusing on intrinsic motivation were also highlighted.

The board also approved a $100,000 budget for new Daktronics scoreboards for the baseball and softball fields. The decision to go with a cost-effective option from BSN at approximately $79,000, rather than an initial $130,000 proposal, not only saves money but also ensures reliable performance with a wired system. Additionally, $60,000 was allocated for new dugout equipment, supporting the high standards of our athletic programs.

The board also approved an early release for students on September 20th to fully participate in the 2024 Homecoming Parade. Also, CISD will host the UIL One Act Play District competition on November 20th, highlighting our dedication to both the arts and community involvement.

CISD Educational Foundation President Sheila Plagens shared that the Foundation is in a robust financial position, with $66,000 currently in its account. The Foundation is gearing up for future fundraising events and continues to play a crucial role in supporting educational programs. They are also looking to add one more member to their board.

In the finance section, the board reviewed and approved the annual tax collections report and a resolution to support the district’s education foundation. They also approved a new sound system for the CHS auditorium, further enhancing our facilities.

The evening wrapped up with Superintendent remarks and the reading of a heartfelt note from Mrs. Frances Godwin, expressing gratitude for the naming of a building in her honor. Dr. Polk read the note aloud, underscoring Mrs. Godwin’s appreciation for the board’s kindness. With ongoing focus on future projects like the CTE building, the board’s decisions showcase their dedication to continuous improvement and community engagement.
