CISD School Board Meeting

The Colorado Independent School District (CISD) Board of Trustees met on December 9, 2024, for their regular session, which began with the swearing-in of Rachel Silva as the new Board Trustee for District 3. This marked an important moment as Silva took on her new role, and the board was eager to begin the meeting with the addition of this new leadership.

CISD School Board MeetingThe meeting continued with the recognition of several staff members who had demonstrated exceptional dedication to the district. November’s Staff of the Month awards were presented to Tracy Hopper and Ann Casebeer from Colorado Elementary School (CES), Shellbe Salazar and Eva Salinas from Colorado Middle School (CMS), and Mary Campbell, April Lenard, and Coach O from Colorado High School (CHS). In recognition of their hard work and commitment, the board hosted a special meal for these honorees.

CISD School Board MeetingFollowing the staff recognition, the board reviewed significant updates on the district’s ongoing construction projects, including progress on Bond 2024 initiatives. Gallagher Construction provided detailed reports on the district’s new softball and baseball fields, highlighting the completion of drainage installation and the arrival of turf for the fields. Turf installation began the following day, and concrete areas between the fields are set to be poured next week. Press boxes and bleachers are expected to be installed starting in January, with the project moving forward on schedule.

In addition, the concession stand renovation was discussed, with materials already delivered, and the renovation expected to be completed alongside the fields. This project is part of the broader plan to improve facilities in the district, enhancing the experience for both athletes and spectators.

CISD School Board MeetingThe board also reviewed options for upgrading the stadium lighting. The current lighting system was underperforming, and the board was presented with two options: replacing the existing bulbs or completing a full upgrade to LED lighting. After a thorough discussion of the energy efficiency, safety benefits, and advanced features of LED lighting, such as programmable settings and remote operation, the board voted unanimously to approve the full LED lighting upgrade.

Next, the board discussed the proposal for a new Career and Technical Education (CTE) building. The proposed bid for construction, valued at $1,833,790.96, was presented along with detailed design layouts and renderings. The building’s design was adjusted to improve efficiency, including changes to the overhead doors and HVAC system. After reviewing the plan, the board unanimously approved the construction bid, solidifying the district’s commitment to expanding career-ready opportunities for students.

CISD School Board MeetingJoey Johnson from Trane presented an exciting proposal for the district’s CTE program, focusing on the creation of a "Lab-in-a-Box" concept in collaboration with the National Coalition of Certification Centers (NC3). This modular HVAC training lab will provide students with the opportunity to earn certifications in high-demand fields such as energy management and building automation, preparing them for well-paying jobs. The board discussed the potential of expanding certifications in emerging fields and the benefits of offering hands-on training with state-of-the-art equipment. The proposal also includes an energy savings program to offset equipment costs, and after further discussion, the board approved the development document to initiate detailed planning for the project.

Later in the meeting, the board reviewed the superintendent’s evaluation and contract. Dr. Larry Polk’s proposed contract modifications were discussed, with the housing allowance excluded from approval. After considering the changes, the board voted unanimously to approve the contract adjustments.

As the meeting concluded, Superintendent Dr. Larry Polk expressed his gratitude for the board's support and the collective effort that continues to drive the district's growth. "We look forward to continuing to forge forward for our students and creating opportunities for their success," he stated. His leadership remains focused on fostering an environment where students thrive academically and personally, preparing them for success beyond the classroom.

The meeting also included updates from all department directors, including athletics, food services, special education, and technology, showcasing the ongoing work in these areas to support student success across the district. With several major initiatives moving forward, Colorado ISD remains committed to ensuring its students receive the best possible education and opportunities for future success.
