The Colorado ISD Board of Trustees gathered for a momentous occasion, celebrating the groundbreaking of the Judge Mark and Judy Merrell Career and Technical Education (CTE) Center. The new facility honors Judge Mark and Judy Merrell, recognizing their unwavering commitment to education, students, and the community.
Dr. Larry Polk opened the ceremony by expressing gratitude to those who attended and emphasizing the importance of the day.
"Today marks a new chapter for Colorado ISD as we break ground on the Mark and Judy Merrell Career and Technical Education Center. This facility will equip our students with the skills they need to build brighter futures and continue the Merrells' legacy of excellence in education and community service. It's a testament to their vision and the lasting impact they’ve had on our district."
Following Dr. Polk’s remarks, Board President Emily Strain spoke to the crowd, sharing her thoughts on the significance of the new center.
"We know that we can never truly fill the shoes of Mark and Judy Merrell. However, the CTE Building and the students it will house is our way of honoring their incredible contributions and ensuring that their legacy lives on, guiding the next generation of students to succeed and thrive."
After the groundbreaking ceremony, the recognition meeting and dinner provided an opportunity for Judge Mark Merrell to speak. In his remarks, he expressed his gratitude for the recognition and the importance of career and technical education at Colorado ISD.
"Colorado ISD has a strong tradition of preparing students for the future through career and technical education. This facility will continue that legacy, giving students opportunities to gain hands-on experience and real-world skills.
Judge Merrell reflected on the district’s long history of vocational programs, from student-built homes in the early 1920's. He also recognized our current welding, robotics, and FCCLA programs. He praised the teachers and staff who inspire students daily and highlighted the facility’s role in preparing future generations for success.
Superintendent Dr. Larry Polk recognized Mrs. Judy Merrell, thanking her for her dedication to students and her lasting impact on the district.
"Mark and Judy Merrell’s commitment to Colorado ISD is extraordinary. Their leadership and generosity have shaped countless student journeys, and it is only fitting that this facility bears both of their names."
