Daisey Roller and Morgan Scott, of the Colorado FFA Chapter, were awarded the Lone Star FFA Degree at the 96th annual Texas FFA State Convention held July 8-12. The Lone Star FFA Degree is the highest degree bestowed by the Texas FFA. Daisey was able to walk the stage to receive hers and Morgan Scott will receive hers at a later date via mail.
The Lone Star FFA Degree recognizes FFA members who have received the Chapter degree, been active FFA members for at least two years, completed at least four semesters of agricultural science at or above the ninth grade level, maintained a supervised agricultural experience (SAE) program, demonstrated their leadership skills, and have shown a commitment to the FFA through involvement at the chapter level and above. Roller and Scott were two of more than 2,300 FFA members to receive this esteemed degree.
These 2 young ladies have worked hard on not only their animal projects but also the record books that show all the details and the many activities and community service projects that helped them along the way.
The 96th annual Texas FFA Convention recorded approximately 16,000 members and guests. Members of the state’s largest agricultural youth leadership organization spent the week attending leadership workshops, participating in events and activities, being recognized for their achievements, and serving as the legislative body for the Texas FFA Association.
The Texas FFA is the nation’s largest state FFA association with a membership of more than 177,000. FFA gives students the opportunity to apply practical classroom knowledge to real-world experiences through local, state and national competitions. Colorado FFA members have had an eventful week in Houston, TX at the 96th Texas FFA State Convention the week of July 7-12, 2024. It was definitely one for the books! Members attending were Ryland Senter, Kymani Martinez, Matt Farmer, Wyatte Roller. Daisey Roller, and Wyatt Wylie. As we left on Sunday we had a discussion about safety and preparedness as we knew hurricane Beryl was brewing and projected to make landfall quite a ways from us. Our safety was always at the top of the list! We were blessed to have a great hotel next to the convention center. Monday we had to stay put at the hotel as hurricane Beryl took a slight almost head-on detour but Tuesday we were right back at it attending leadership workshops to learn about social media and to "learn how to say things the right way that will reach the correct audience and where they can understand" as stated by Colorado FFA
President Ryland Senter. That evening we were fortunate to get to attend a concert by Hudson Westbrook and Braxton Keith.
Wednesday was a busy day as we had the 1st General Session, business session, and the 2nd General Session. Members were able to listen to keynote speaker Grainger Smith and participate as voting delegates to deal with important FFA business. That afternoon they held the Lonestar Degree presentation as well where approximately 2,000 or more members receive there Lonestar Degree. In addition to the activities the kids had FFA advisor Miss Morris helped scan in all voting delegates for Session 1, 2, 3, 4, and Fun Night along with getting info to other advisors about current conditions to help them arrive safely and prepared as food, fuel, and electricity was limited early in the week.
Thursday held the 3rd & 4th General Sessions where incoming state officers spoke to the members and delegates that would be electing them in their state office for the next year. That evening was Fun Night where the theme was "Houston, we have a problem" space/alien themed. The best talent team from each area performed to find out who would represent Texas FFA at Nationals. There 12 in total.
Friday was the 5th general session where they announced the new officer team. It was a great week of fun, learning, and supporting others!
Hurricane tough through it all!
